Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is this program for?

A: The SHE Yoga & Meditation Teacher Training is for any woman who has practiced yoga for two or more years. It’s ideal if you also have meditation experience, but that is not necessary. Healers, therapists, coaches, authors, doulas, midwives, mommy-preneurs, businesswomen, and yoginis between the ages of 22-68 have all been past attendees. All reported this training was one of the most powerful experiences of their lives, changing them for the better.

Q: Do I need to already be a yoga teacher? And what if I’m not interested in teaching yoga?

A: No. While we will learn skills for teaching women’s yoga and meditation, many women attend these trainings to deepen their own practice — and find great value.

Q: Is this a Yoga Alliance Training?

A: As I am an E-RYT 500 teacher, with a 500-hour yoga school, you can apply the 80 hours from this training towards certification with my yoga school.

To do that, you would also need to complete all of the following:

  • Completion of the SHE Yoga & Meditation Teacher Training
  • One of our 5-day SHE Retreats (or you may take the SYMTT a second time in place of this)
  • A Year of SHE (or the former SHE School 2016)
  • The SHE Leadership Circle
  • 1 week, silent, Buddhist meditation retreat (w/ approved teacher and approach)
  • The Way of the Happy Woman Certification Training (a 6-month home study program). Learn more about this here. Only women who attend the SYMTT will receive an invitation to join this at the end of the training.
  • Practice teaching and student feedback
  • Video of you leading a SHE Yoga & Meditation class
  • Commitment to live as a role model, exuding the principles of The Way of the Happy Woman
  • Sara’s final approval

The hours from all of those combined would then allow you to become certified with our 500-hour YA school.

This is a 80-hour Yoga Alliance training and attendance in the entire program is required. Those who are unable to attend all of the classes will be awarded the certificate based only on the hours attended. Please plan your time and travel accordingly in order to not miss any of the sessions.

Q: Does this certify me to teach SHE Yoga & Meditation?

A: You will be certified to teach SHE Yoga & Meditation upon completion of our entire 500-hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training program (see the answer to the previous question for details about this).

Q: Does this certify me to lead The Way of the Happy Woman Retreats?

A: You will be certified to teach SHE Yoga & Meditation upon completion of our entire 500-hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training program (see the answer to the previous question for details about this).

Q: When does registration close?

A: Early registration ends on June 18. Women who join us by that date will receive a $200 discount. Regular registration closes on June 28.

Q: Why does registration end so long before the training?

A: It’s a big investment to reserve a retreat center for this kind of program, and this registration deadline allows us to book it. It also allows you to enjoy a 6-month payment plan, and to have the necessary time required to book flights and step away from your life for one week.

Q: If I can’t attend this one, when will you offer another training like this?

A: I don’t know when I will offer the next training, so if you feel called to join, I hope to see you at this one!

Q: Did you really create the first women’s yoga teacher training?

A: As far as I can tell, yes. I was the first to offer a yoga teacher training for women, by women, to teach women. While there are now other teacher trainings with this focus, I do not know of any others that also include such an emphasis on meditation, women’s work, and SHE Dharma.

Q: How intensive is this program? Will I be exhausted when I return?

A: Absolutely not. Most teacher trainings are bloated with information but short on insight. This training will feel much like a retreat. I have specifically designed the schedule and activities to rejuvenate you.

At the same time, it will be physically and emotionally challenging. However, a HUGE part of my teaching is self-care, healthy boundaries, and keeping yourself energized and fully alive by honoring feminine rhythms of receptivity and action, being and doing. Because of this, you’ll return home feeling like an evolved version of your former self, ready to live—rather than override—your feminine nature in your day-to-day life, in your practice, and in your teaching.

Q: I’ve had troubles with women-only groups before. I’m nervous about how I’ll be accepted.

A: So many of the women who attend my trainings say the same thing — yet leave feeling welcomed and accepted into a sisterhood they didn’t even realize how much they needed. This struggle with woman-to-woman relating is precisely one of the long-standing wounds we’ll be working to overcome. Even though women are deeply communal, we can struggle much more than men do to form healthy, supportive communities of acceptance and support. We’ll discover why this is, and what you can do to transform it — in your teaching and in your personal life.

Q: Do the “essential silence” periods mean that there is no talking during these hours?

A: Yes. These quiet, contemplative periods are important for accessing your inner wisdom, integrating what you’re learning, and deepening your meditative practice. Of course, self-care trumps any rule, so if you need any help or support during this time, you can reach out to a staff member. But you will be encouraged to refrain from any non-vital chatter, both for your own benefit and out of respect for your fellow participants.

Q: What airport should I fly into? And how do I get to Shambala Petit Hotel?

A: Participants will fly into Cancun International Airport and can travel by a private taxi (about a 1-hour drive) to Shambala Petit Hotel in Tulum.

The resort recommends three different companies:

Alternative transport options

  • Shuttle bus Cancun airport: $ 40.00 Usd
  • Tourist bus Cancun airport to Playa Del Carmen (1 hour): approx. $8.50 USD (depart hourly)
  • Bus from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum town (50 minutes): approx. $15.00 USD (depart hourly)
  • Taxi from Tulum town to Shambala Petit Hotel: approx. $7.00 USD

Car Rental:

The resort recommends Hertz car rentals at: is important to purchase the full insurance coverage with the rental. The resort is not responsible for any damage to your vehicle while staying with them, and their parking is limited. They request to please try not to rent a car if is not necessary.

Q: What day/time do I need to arrive?

A: Check-in begins at 3:00pm on December 1, 2018. The training begins at dinner time on that date. We recommend you arrive at Shambala Petit Hotel no later than 5 pm so you can settle in and relax before our evening session (participation at all sessions is required if you wish to receive Yoga Alliance accreditation).

Q: What day/time do I need to depart?

A: Our training ends after breakfast on December 8, 2018. We recommend that you book flights for the afternoon or early evening, to allow you plenty of time to get to the airport, without missing our last session that morning.

Q: Is lodging included in the cost of registration?

A: Yes.

Q: May I get a single room or request a private bath?

A: Yes, you can request a private bath (most rooms have one). The earlier you sign up, the better your chances are of this. Please be sure to make a note of it in your application.

Also, it could be possible to have a single cabana and pay a higher price. Contact us about this

Q: This retreat is in Tulum, Mexico. Do I need to be worried about the water or food?

A: Absolutely not. The retreat center has a private water supply on-site, and they filter their water themselves. Tulum is very tourist friendly—it’s clean and safe and has great food and beaches! I myself have vacationed there and I love it!

Q: Will I have free time to travel around Tulum during the training?

A: No. We like to be clear that this is not a “yoga vacation.” It’s an immersion into yourself, with qualifying hours for the Yoga Alliance. For these reasons, there are no “free” days or evenings. Please plan on arriving early or staying later if you want more downtime or and/or to go sightseeing. In fact, we encourage this!

Q: What if I have dietary restrictions? (Vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.)

A: The retreat center happily accommodates dietary restrictions. You will have the chance to specify these at the time of applying.

Q: What if I want to stay at Shambala Petit Hotel an extra day or two, before or after the training?

A: You will need to contact the retreat center directly here to see if there is available, and, if so, to arrange this on your own.

Q: Are there scholarships or sliding scales available?

A: Yes, there are a few scholarships available for this retreat. If you are in financial need, please contact us and share some more information about your current situation.

Q: It seems like a big expense. What makes this training worth the investment?

A: For starters, this is the only retreat like this anywhere in the world. You’ll learn so many things about yourself, your cycles, your feminine power, feminine leadership, and how to practice and live life, fully, as a woman. This could be the single best investment that you ever make in yourself, as you will leave a different person. Alumnae from this training have expressed this– you can read their reviews here.

We accept a maximum of 17 students, making this a highly intimate and personalized experience.

Q: Do I really deserve this? Can I really justify investing in myself in this way? Am I being selfish, spoiled, and self-indulgent?

A: Let’s find out, together. I don’t have the answers to these questions, but your SHE does. So let’s ask HER:

  • Check in with your body: How does the idea of participating in the SHE School feel in your body ? Grounded and relaxed? Good but fluttering at the thought of the unknown? Is there some excitement in that flutter? Those are bodily signs of “YES.”
  • Investigate where you skepticism is coming from: Is your SHE/Soul having doubts you need to listen to? Or are your Inner Critic, Skeptic, Perfectionist, or Patriarch chiming in? Do these voices tell you you’re not good enough, you don’t deserve it, you don’t have the time, or that the circumstances aren’t EXACTLY right? If you have particular fears or worries, don’t shove them aside. Let them in. Write them down. Talk about them with someone. Bring them into the light and see what they’re really about. Are you afraid to grow? To change? What are you really afraid of? Are these fears wise signals that you want to heed? Or are they holding you back from what you truly want?
  • Inquire: If you knew you couldn’t fail at this, that you’d have fun and evolve and expand as a result of your effort and participation— what would you do? What are your intentions for the coming year? What do you most long for? What matters most to you in your life? What support do you need to actualize these? Does this feel aligned?

Q: I’m feeling fear and resistance, but want to join. What should I do?

A: The bigger the commitment, and the more aligned it is with your highest Self (your SHE), the bigger the resistance will be. Honor the resistance. Listen to it. Pour it a cup of tea and chat with it. Inside your resistance is a friend — and an important message to help you to move forward. It may be saying things like, “Who do you think you are signing up for this?!” or “You’re so selfish to even consider this.

Don’t ignore it or judge it. Listen and honor it Resistance shows up to try to keep us small, to keep us the way that we are, all cozy in our comfort zones. We all know that real living is just at the edge of our comfort zone. We need to enter that edge in order to grow. What is the cost of staying in your comfort zone? If you stay where you are, will that allow you to become the woman you really want to be two years from now? Five years from now? Fear and resistance mean it’s time for you to step up. By the end of the immersion, you’ll feel much more confident with following your heart, trusting your SHE and aligning your life with Her (rather than letting your Resistance or Inner Critic run your life). Let your sacred longings— not fear or resistance— take the lead here. Let your SHE make the decision to sign up.

Q: I’m having technical trouble signing up.
